When Does Social Media Marketing Become Effective?

Last night I received this following email: "I recently completed my life coaching training program. I have been trying to get clients - yet no luck. I have been marketing and marketing(facebook etc.) and still nothing...any ideas how I can get my life coaching business off the ground??!

This was my response:

1) Today Life Coaching is a growing industry. But the real question is - How many life coaches are actually successful? This is a painful question - but you need to research what it is that so many of these Life coaches are not successful.

2) Here is my take on the matter: I follow the mailing lists and the forums and I see what newly trained life coaches are writing in their advertisements: "Are you looking to live your dream life? Are you looking to live free of financial stress? ..etc.."

Now I ask myself: My dear life coach - are you financially free? Are you really living your dream life? C'mon people be honest! Its hard for people to hire a life coach if that life coach has not done it himself. I would never hire a website marketing coach if that coach never marketed a website before in his life.

I think that the title 'life coach' is a very general title. In my humble opinion coach on what you are good at and have succeeded in the past. Which this leads me to focusing on a niche market.

3) Marketing is hard. Its actually very hard! Now I am not trying to discourage you or anything - but this is a fact. Yes one can market on a zero budget via social media - but on the other hand there are about a few good millions of others who are doing the same. Why should someone do business with you?

Therefore if you are using social media as your marketing tool then focus on a niche market within social media and dominate that market and become the ultimate expert in your market. I see a major difference between coaches that focus on a niche and those that are 'way out there'. Remember: its always better to be a big fish in a small pond.

Conclusion:

1) When it comes to coaching - focus on a niche market.

2) Focusing on a niche market will allow you to effectively market your business via social media and to the right crowd. There are many niche social networks and forums that will help you to become the ultimate resource. This is when social media marketing becomes effective.

3) Don't just bomb with advertisements - share quality information.
