When and How I Understood Social Media Marketing
I first heard of Facebook in 2004. I was working once a week on a college campus (KU) with Jewish students and they were always talking about this thing called "Facebook". For a while I thought they were talking about some yearbook until later on I figured out it was something on the web that I couldn't join (had to be a college student). Then in 2006 I joined Facebook and played around with it a little, checked it once a week and didn't really pay that much attention to it. Later on that year I started getting into Internet marketing and I was learning SEO yada yada....and every night I would sit in front of the computer searching for blogs and websites that would help explain to me and show me the secrets (lol we've all been there..) Until one night I stumbled on the Stompernet site. This was my first introduction to social media marketing. Andy Jenkins of Stompernet was talking about social media. I didn't really understand the concept - but he made a comment about Facebook that changed my whole outlook and helped me understand social media. Andy showed the stats for Facebook and other various social networks and said that social media marketing is basically "going where the fish are". Of course! that's when I started getting more involved in Facebook and went on a quest to discover this whole new world. Some people will tell you: Don't waste your time with social media marketing - because social media marketing is dying. I disagree with that. Social media marketing will help you deliver results in the long run. This is what most people don't understand. Its also not about constant advertising. Its about creating constant value.
