Is Twitter Really Effective For Marketing?

I recently read a report produced by MarketingExperiments that basically said that 10% of Twitter users do 90% of the tweeting.

Now if this is true (it does make sense) then I would assume that Twitter is not so effective for marketing and its becoming a collection of individuals shrying out to the public, instead of what it should of been - two way conversation, interaction yada yada...

On the other hand I do believe that Twitter is effective for companies or individuals who are already known. Musicians like Matisyahu does a great job with Twitter. For most small businesses its not so effective and most small business owners who are tweeting are either constantly tweeting with people they already know or Re-tweeting stuff they really don't have any interest in.

I am talking here from a personal experience. Everyday I work with many companies from many different industries and many of the marketing directors tell me they are shifting their efforts from Twitter to LinkedIn because Twitter simply won't and can't deliver the results like LinkedIn can.

Once upon a time I use to be a huge fan of Twitter. Then when it started attracting massive amounts of spam and people promoting their twitter cash machines - it has now become like a snazzy chat room.

Focus focus focus!

Because their is so much hype about Twitter it seems like a great tool. To many people have lost their jobs because they are spending so much time on Twitter. A friend of mine who owns a big company recently told me that he will not hire people who spend time on Twitter. Waisting time on Twitter retweeting nonsense and what not will not deliver results it just consumes and burns your time.

Focus your efforts an energy in places that will get you faster results. Invest more time in proper keyword research and SEO. This will give you better results in the short and long run, then twittering around all day.
