The Difference Between a Social Media Strategist and a Web Marketing Strategist
Over the past few months I have come across and worked with a few social media strategists and web marketing strategists. It was very interesting to see the difference between the two schools of thought. Obviously both are important. Your marketing campaign needs social media as well as web marketing. What's the difference? The difference is in the results. The web marketing strategist was capable of bringing in results, high conversions much faster then the social media strategist. Web marketing is a result driven campaign or you can call it: A race to profitability. The social media strategist showed how to best use Social media to relate to people, social engagement etc.. This method is cute - but doesn't convert nearly as well as the web marketing campaign. You need both. The question is where do you want to focus your efforts: A results driven campaign or a campaign that can take months and months and will reach poor conversions. But here is what bothers me: Many social media consultants when sitting with a client will start convincing them that social media is the only way to go and to back themselves up they will bring in examples from Dell computers or other big companies that are using Twitter for marketing. Very simple: Companies that are already very well known will obviously have more success using these tools then the regular guy starting out today. Getting Twitter followers and lots of Facebook fans is cute - will they bring you the results that you need ..NOW? The answer is no. In the long run? Maybe. Remember: Results is the name of the game!
