How to Start a Tutoring Business - Part 1
Tutoring can be a very lucrative business, that’s if you have lots of kids and adults to tutor. Parents are always looking for tutors and believe or not Schools are looking for tutors as well [or sometimes known as “shadows”].
A tutoring business can be a great solution [and great money!] for young couples or College students. How many times do they over look this option!!
So how do you get clients?
Preparation
1] You must treat it like a business. Posting on some mailing list once and hanging a sign on your local bulletin board one time is not going to get you the people [and the money] you want.
3] Know how much you will be charging ahead of time, be sure about yourself, and when you advertise – let people know the price! When those who are viewing your ad will see the price – it will help them to make a decision.
4] Write a descriptive ad. Do not write: “I am offering tutoring services, call me at …”, -
- Let people know who you are
- What areas you can tutor in
- What age group
- Where you will be tutoring - location
- How much you will be charging
- Contact information – very important - Make it easy for them to contact you! Have you home number, Cel number & email address.
5] Write out your ad on MS word. Make it look professional.
6] Be willing to travel to other cities. Expand your market, this could be a pain but it’s worth it!
7] Customer service, customer service, customer service! The best customer service will help you get your name out there.
The Best Customer Service
Marketing
1] Mailing lists!

Find Your Local Email Group
2] Post your fliers in areas where students or parents hang out: Libraries, pizza shops, synagogues, church, Supermarkets etc…
3] Make business cards – this could be your easiest marketing tool.
4] Go to your local schools and offer your services. Schedule a meeting with the principal and offer your services to the school. In my case I asked the principal if he knows of any parents who are looking for a tutor and the very next day I was already in touch with parents who were seeking a tutor. Asked the principal if the school is looking for tutors to work within the school as 'shadows'.
5] Talk to teachers in your local school and ask if they know of any parents who are seeking a tutor.
6] Then again – Why only focus on your local school?
7] Get an email address like: Englishtutor@yahoo.com or something like that.
8] Offer to tutor at the kid’s home. In general, many parents like it when you come to their home and tutor. It makes it easier on them.
9] When is it a great time for marketing during the school year? The beginning of the year [September time] and during Report card season!
- Launch your tutoring business a month or so before the school year begins – focus your efforts on building up a clientele and make sure your name is out there enough before the school year begins. When the school year begins, many parents suddenly start looking for tutors. Launch your marketing campaign again – this time they will already have heard of you.
- Continue marketing through out the school year and when report cards season starts kicking in – launch another heavy marketing campaign.
