How To Hire a Good Consultant - Part 1
Many times when a company is facing a challenge, they will hire an outside consultant to help overcome the current obstacle and guide them in the right direction. The question is: with so many professional consultants out there or those who call themselves as such - how do you know when you are hiring a good consultant? Before you go hiring a consultant it is critical that you first know what you exactly want from that consultant. Do your research first and figure out what is that you lack understanding in so the consultant can guide you and show you the way. Here is what happens many times (from personal experience working with clients!): A consultant gets a call, lets just say in my case: "We are stuck, our website is not getting any traffic... when can we meet?" - When I get a call like this then I know that the consulting session or sessions will be very hard on the client. Why? Because they are not sure what they are looking for and this makes it even harder to teach them because they are just to overwhelmed with the material. However when I get a call: " We are stuck, our website is not getting any traffic...we would like to focus on Article marketing, forum marketing and social bookmarketing... can you help us?" - This makes things much easier! This means they have done the research and they know exactly what they are looking for in a consulting session. Which this by the way helps you the client save money. Always go with a consultant who has done it himself. Its one thing to read articles on the web and become the all time expert its another thing when you have actually been in the business and are aware of all the little details and challenges that someone in your industry needs to face. Never go with someone who calls himself a 'guru'. Remember the old joke: " A guru is a person who borrows your watch from you to tell you the time and charge you money for it...". Many times these gurus will promise you all sorts of things..... in the end you will find yourself paying loads of money for nothing. Be sure to ask the consultant if he will give you the tools to show you - how you can do it yourself. If not, then you will find yourself chained to a consultant, and paying him for more and more sessions when nothing is really happening in your business. Always ask for recommendations!
