Do You Have The Guts?
This past weekend I met quite a few people, many of them young who all expressed a burning desire to start their own businesses. Each one was telling me their goals and dreams once they finished college. This one wants to start a consulting business, this one wants to become an investor, Another would like to start a calling center and so one and so forth. When I came home, I was thinking to myself - how many of them will actually go for their dreams? How many of them will do what it takes to create their own business? I have been thinking about this for some time now. You meet people who seem to have it all; the right mindset, innovative ideas and it seems like everything is in place - yet their businessed never really make it from point A to point B. Why is that? It seems to me that a person can have the right mind set, the best idea, the best marketing & business plan and all of the things that we talk about here at iyazam.com - yet one thing is still missing: Guts What is Guts? Guts is a form of courage. When we ask someone: Do You Have The Guts? This usually refers to having the courage to take action in an activity that demands some physical strength or activity. When launching a business many people don't realize the physical aspects that come with it. Many people don't realize that it demands a lot of running around and sweating. "Having the guts" is in the little things that we don't even pay attention to. For example: About two weeks ago a friend of mine launched a new business. He was looking for his first clients and I connected him with a potential client. It was Sunday night and the meeting was scheduled for Monday morning at 11:00am. I called my friend Sunday night to wish him a good luck and to make sure he was well prepared, I asked him: " Are you all set for tomorrow?" and he responded with: "My God where am I going to park tomorrow? If I park at X Street I'll have to walk a mile to the coffee shop and If I park at Z street its even further!". Right after that phone call I knew this was going to be his last meeting and sure enough since then he has dropped his idea and got a regular 9-5 job. Many times we picture ourselves running our own business, sitting in a nice excutive chair, meetings in nice coffee shop....the good life. When the dream hits reality things are a little different. Running your own business may involve alot of running around. Get ready! Recently I met a very successful business man here in Israel and I asked him: tell me what made you so successful in your business...and you don't even drive!? His answer was very simple: "When ever a client would ask to meet with me, I never complained or tried to push off the meeting, I simply asked him: "Where would you like to meet?" Many times I had to shlep on buses for hours just for a 15 minute meeting. But I never complained about it. The clients and the potential clients saw how much I was willing to go out for them and this is what got my customer base going" Now let me ask you: Do You Have The Guts? Are you willing to walk the extra mile or two to make things happen? Do you have the physical strength to get the job done?
