Becoming A Freelancer In Todays Economy

With the way things are running in today's economy - more and more companies are cutting down on employee benefits and employees. Having said that this can be a great opportunity for freelancers to jump in and get more business. As a freelancer you only get paid based on performance (usually), you do the work - you get paid and the company owes you nothing as far as any benefits are concerned.

So how do you get jobs as a freelancer?

The first step is to put yourself out there and offer your services to companies. Its a matter of running your own marketing campaign offering your services to companies.

Now the real question is: how much should you charge? Some will tell you that you should not compromise on price and charge what you are worth. I disagree. The reality is that companies and individuals today are looking for the cheapest (and best) service they can get. You may be the ultimate pro - but if the company will find someone cheaper then they will go with the cheapest offer.

This is why freelancers need to be realistic. We all want money but we need to put logic first before our emotions.

As a freelancer it is critical that you create your own portfolio with testimonials and recommendations. This is what will get you business in addition to this you must offer The best customer service.

Should you focus on social media to get more clients? You can create leverage via social media to get your name out there and through your networks connections you may get a gig or two. But don't focus your whole time on social mediaSome things just don't change in life - you will need to pick up the phone and call people. Also attending networking events, job fairs and setting up meetings are critical because the face to face contact is very important - not many people will hire someone to work for them unless they have met with them first.Social media is a great way to build your reputation but don't totally rely on it.

Here in Israel I recommend that freelancers use a private company to outsource all of their tax and other billings and money issues. These private payroll companies can create receipts for you...something that most companies will ask from you. I recommend using Yeul Sachir in Jerusalem.
